This year is moving along way-way too fast. Big Bird isn’t crazy about the heat and neither am I. One hundred? For two weeks Big Bird was in training with Brian , the new managers at Los Pinos. He’s had quite an attitude about not wanting to work, and they have worked through that, improving sliding stops, spins, and flying lead changes. There are many new horses at Los Pinos, where Big Bird resides and some very nice looking horses. Percherons, a Danish Warmblood, some new Paints.
In case anyone wants to know Big Bird’s breeding, it is mostly quarter horse, with Paint blood thrown in during the last generations. His real name is VL’s Doc’s Whiskers. He earned Big Bird because of his unusual height for Paint horses. His daddy (died from a lightening strike) was Doc and Scotch, a colorful Tobiano-Overo that looked like the old type muscled Quarter Horse. His mother was Sheza Wee Whisker, both parents going back to numerous Doc horses and many with a good show record. The breeder was Virgil Lawson, his wife and daughter were successful in Paint Horse shows.
Although Big Bird is doing a fair job of reining, he is very versatile. I’ve had him on trails the first couple of years and he will go anywhere, up, down, inclines, water, bridges. Not a bit scared.
He is also a natural with dressage and just needs the right coaching.
He loves to jump. He wouldn’t think of refusing a jump. He has been roped with in the very beginning and still remembers that he has to keep a rope tight. He loves tricks, like sneaking a hanky out of your pocket, taking off your hat, telling you no way does he want to work, and of course he’s got a big smile.
Something from Big Bird’s owner: I have gotten back into something I used to do, when I rode seven days a week, led trail rides up the Pikes Peak Slopes, barrel raced, worked rodeos, judged horseshows, and worked cattle:

Western Riding Lessons

I have always had great fun teaching folks to ride safely, all ages, gain confidence with a good seat and hands, and learn to handle a horse effectively. Bring your own horse to Los Pinos, as it has excellent arenas for lessons for either horseshow eventing or barrelracing and gymkhana events. If you take a series, you’ll even get a certificate with your photo. Now how cool is that? Call 719-784-3838
